As there is a debate around whether it was necessary, we look at some of the pressing issues in Uttar Pradesh.

Crime Rate increased by 24%

Crime rates against women have gone up strikingly between January and March 2018. More than 10,000 FIRs were registered during this period. However, officials maintained the stance that the spike in number is because of fearlessness of women coming forward (Source: Times of India)

Electricity deficit

Uttar Pradesh has the biggest electricity deficit in the entire country. Electricity theft is being done at a bigger scale due to which UP suffered higher loss of electricity in 2017 than 2016. (Source: Bloomberg)

Misuse of power

Uttar Pradesh police personnel have been accused of misusing the power in the light of an undeclared endorsement given by the higher ups, National Human Rights Commission reported in February 2018. (Source: Indian Express)

Costs involved

Renaming a city or state can be a costly affair and specially when one is talking about 13th most populous district. Making changes in official stationary, software, databases, public places, etc. could take a toll on budget of a state. After all this practice, there would be hardly any change from the perspective of common men or business.

Twitter reacts

Twitterati shared mixed views on the name change. Some users calling that the infrastructure development should be the priority over the name change. However, some users were calling the Prayagraj name as a mean to restore “Bhartiya sanskriti” (Indian culture)

Whether the name change would create any better tomorrow or things will be the same as they have been, please share your opinion in the comments.
